Yuki Snowflake® is a deciduous deutzia cultivar in the Hydrangeaceae family developed by Dr. Tom Ranney of NCSU. It is a dwarf selection growing only 1 to 2 feet tall and 1 to 3 feet wide. Grow Yuki Snowflake in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade and in hot summer areas, afternoon shade is desirable. The mounding habit requires little pruning and the plant is deer-resistant. In spring, the shrub is covered in white, long-lasting clusters of flowers, looking a bit like a shaken snow globe. The foliage is a dense and green in summer and changes to a deep red in fall. Use Yuki Snowflake® in groups, or in the border of the garden. It is useful as a foundation plant or specimen and could be grown in a container. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Deutzia is generally pest and disease-free, but aphids and leaf spots may occur. Shrubs may need some protection for late spring frost and cold winters to prevent tip dieback.
