Alain Blanchard rose is a hybrid Gallica rose in the rose family (Rosaceae) bred by Jean-Pierre Vibert of France in 1839. Parentage is Rosa centifolia L. × Rosa gallica. This shrub will grow 4-5 feet tall and wide in full sun to partial shade. Plant in fertile moist well-drained soil. Prune when blooming is completed to remove dead diseased and old canes and to control size. Flowers are crimson with pink and purple mottling, golden stamens and a strong fragrance. They are medium to large, single to semi-double and have a cupped bloom form. They bloom once a year in either spring or summer. Foliage is dark green and stems are armed with prickles. It will produce rose hips if the flowers are not pruned off. Use this shrub as a specimen, in the border or small groups in an English, cottage or cutting garden.
