Rose deutzia is a compact, rounded, deciduous shrub. It is multi-stemmed with arching branches and dark green foliage. This artificial hybrid is a cross between Deutzia gracilis and Deutzia purpurascens introduced by the Lemoine Nursery of Nancy, France in the late 1890s. It is a member of the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). The hybrid epithet is Latin for “rosy” and refers to the color of the flowers. Rose deutzia is easily grown in well-drained average garden soil in full sun to partial shade; however, more abundant flowering occurs in full sun. This plant is low maintenance, but annual pruning is required to remove old dead branches and should be done immediately after blooming has finished. Keep in mind when pruning that blossoms will appear on old growth. To propagate this shrub softwood cuttings should be taken during the summer. The shrub size is 2 to 3 feet tall and equally wide. The tiny flowers are 5-petaled, pink blossoms that are paler pink on the interior. Flowers appear in late spring. Plants from this genus are seldom bothered by deer. Rose Deutzia could be used as a foundation planting, in small groups, shrub borders, or hedge.
