Zinnia is an erect, annual herb in the Asteraceae (daisy) family. This plant is native to Mexico and the southwestern United States and grows 1 to 2 feet tall and 6 inches to 1 foot wide. Zinnia grows in full sun to partial shade in soils ranging from clay and sand to organic and loamy. This plant needs good drainage and moist conditions. Zinnia is easy to start from seed indoors in spring or outdoors after the chance of frost has passed. It is also commonly available from greenhouses in 6-packs. Deadhead to prolong the bloom season. It is resistant to powdery mildew. This low-maintenance, heat- and drought-tolerant, colorful annual is a must for the garden. Its showy, yellow or orange flowers bloom from summer until the first frost and make excellent cut flowers. Plants are compact and bushier than standard varieties. Place this plant as an accent in the front and center of the border, in containers, or anywhere long-lasting blooms are desired. Mass planting is encouraged for borders or walkways in butterfly, pollinator, drought-tolerant, and cottage gardens.
